A Challenge in the Arctic.

In
1997, the Russian Federation (RF) ratified the United Nations
Convention on the Law of the Sea and started the explorations intended
to specify the outer limit of the continental shelf in the Arctic
Ocean. In December 2001, Russia was the first State to present the
Submis. In 2002, the UN Commission on the Limits of the
Continental Shelf prepared its decision concerning the submitted Claim
of the Russian Federation. The commission recommended further research
on the submitted claim. From 2002, work was conducted with the aim to
prepare a revised Submission to the UN Commission and it was decided to
submit a revised claim by 2013 on the outer limit of the continental
shelf in the Arctic. When preparing the claim, it became evident that
additional complex hydrographic and geophysical surveys were required
in the Arctic.

First High-resolution Map of the Great Barrier Reef Released
15 Jan 2018 Source: Hydro International

One and a half million square kilometres of bathymetric seafloor data
have been released to the public by Geoscience Australia under
partnership with James Cook University and the Australian Hydrographic
Service of the Great Barrier Reef. The project carried out
high-resolution bathymetric scans, which were combined with existing
datasets held by the government to create the most comprehensive,
detailed models produced to date. The release comes as the federal
government announced an AU$60 million investment in protective measures
for the Great Barrier Reef, which include measures to shield the Reef
from polluted water, and investment in Australian Institute of Marine
Science (AIMS) and the CSIRO to develop new ways for the reef to adapt
and recover.
